National Gallery of Victoria: Westwood | Kawakubo Exhibition

Description

View 140+ pieces from international museums and private collections

This major international exhibition brings together the work of two groundbreaking designers, Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. Beginning their careers in the 1970s in the UK and Japan, both Westwood (1941–2022) and Kawakubo (b. 1942) revolutionized fashion by challenging conventions and championing personal freedom and creative independence. Their innovative designs have redefined ideas of taste, gender, beauty, and the function of clothing. The exhibition features over 140 pieces from the NGV Collection alongside significant loans from global museums and private collections. The main themes - Punk and Provocation, Rupture, Reinvention, The Body, and The Power of Clothes - highlight both the shared and distinct aspects of each designer’s visionary work.
